In 2006 the World Health Organisation estimated that there was a shortage of more than 4.3 million healthcare workers worldwide, with low-income countries particularly struggling to meet demand.

Fast-forward to today and while the gap may have narrowed, an ageing world population means that demand for healthcare workers on a global scale will continue for the foreseeable future.

The number of different jobs within the healthcare is diverse and they are commonly divided into two key sub sectors: allied and core health.

Allied healthcare professionals work alongside doctors and nurses by providing a range of support roles, such as rehabilitation and palliative care. The key roles within this area of work are physiotherapists, occupational therapists, audiologists and speech therapists and health visitors.

Core healthcare workers are those jobs that many of us pretended we were doing when we were in kindergarten, and these are the types of roles that many countries look to overseas workers for help in plugging the skills gaps that exist at home.

From doctors, dentists and psychologists to nurses, midwives and pharmacists these are the people who are the most qualified and occupy the most senior roles in the healthcare sector.
